A historic division of Ireland located in the northeastern part of the island; six of Ulster's nine counties are in Northern Ireland.
Former kingdom in Northern Ireland, annexed by England 1461, from Jacobean times a center of English, and later Scottish, settlement on land confiscated from its owners; divided 1921 into Northern Ireland (counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry [now Derry], and Tyrone) and the Republic of Ireland (counties Cavan, Donegal, and Monaghan).
