ETYM French tirer to draw or pull; of Teutonic origin, and akin to Eng. tear to rend. Related to Tirade.

Inflatable (pneumatic) rubber casing fitted to the wheel rims of bicycles and motor vehicles. The first pneumatic rubber tire was patented by R W Thomson 1845, but it was John Boyd Dunlop of Belfast who independently reinvented pneumatic tires for use with bicycles 1888–89. Vulcanization, used in tire manufacture, was invented by Charles Goodyear in 1844.
