um in which powdered pigments are mixed with a water-soluble binding agent such as egg yolk. Tempera is noted for its strong, translucent colors. A form of tempera was used in ancient Egypt, and egg tempera was the foremost medium for panel painting in late medieval and early Renaissance Europe. It was gradually superseded by oils from the late 15th century onward.
In the 20th century it has been used by us painter Andrew Wyeth.

J S Bach composed The Well-Tempered Clavier, a sequence of 48 preludes and fugues in every key of the chromatic scale, to demonstrate the superior versatility of tempered tuning.

temperance movement

Societies dedicated to curtailing the consumption of alcohol by total prohibition, local restriction, or encouragement of declarations of personal abstinence (“the pledge”). Temperance movements were first set up in the US, Ireland, and Scotland, then in the N of England in the 1830s.
The proponents of temperance were drawn from evangelical or nonconformist Christians, labor unionists, Chartists, members of cooperatives, the self-help movement, and the Church of England. After 1871 the movement supported the Liberal Party in its attempts to use the licensing laws to restrict the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
