Capital of Iran; Industries include textiles, chemicals, engineering, and tobacco. It was founded in the 12th century and made the capital 1788 by Mohammed Shah. Much of the city was rebuilt in the 1920s and 1930s. Tehran is the site of the Gulistan Palace (the former royal residence). There are three universities; the Shahyad Tower is a symbol of modern Iran.

Conference held 1943 in Tehran, Iran, the first meeting of World War II Allied leaders Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin. The chief subject discussed was coordination of Allied strategy in W and E Europe.
