ETYM New Lat. tanagra, probably from Brazilian tangara.
Any of numerous New World woodland birds having brightly colored males.
Finchlike American bird.
Any of various New World passerine birds, of the family Emberizidae, which also includes blackbirds, orioles, and grackles. Tanagers that breed in N America all belong to the genus Piranga and include the scarlet tanager p. olivacea, about 7 in/18 cm long. There are about 230 species in forests of Central and South America; all males are brilliantly colored.
