Steel containing chromium that makes it resistant to corrosion; SYN. chromium steel.
Widely used alloy of iron, chromium, and nickel that resists rusting. Its chromium content also gives it a high tensile strength. It is used for cutlery and kitchen fittings. Stainless steel was first produced in the UK 1913 and in Germany 1914.
