The art is said to have originated in the Middle East. At first only one monumental figure was represented on each window, but by the middle of the 12th century, incidents in the life of Jesus or of one of the saints were commonly depicted. Fine examples of medieval stained glass are to be found in the cathedrals of Canterbury, Lincoln, Chartres, Cologne, and Rouen. More recent designers include William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, and Marc Chagall. Since World War II the use of thick, faceted glass joined by cement (common in the 6th century) has been revived.
