Acronym for silicon on insulator. A method used in the construction of microprocessors in which the chip’s transistors—the tiny circuits that conduct electrical charges—are built on a layer of silicon placed on top of a layer of insulating material, such as glass. SOI construction improves speed at the same time it reduces the amount of power required by the microprocessor.
