British aircraft manufacturers. The Type 184 seaplane 1914 was the first aircraft to carry a torpedo and, during the World War I Gallipoli campaign, was the first aircraft to sink an enemy ship with a torpedo.
The firm began by making balloons 1898 and only turned to aircraft 1908. The company also manufactured a number of airships for the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service in their Bedford factory.
