World War II nickname for US Navy Construction Battalions (CBs).
Their primary role was the construction of airfields and similar facilities on captured islands. So that they could begin work as soon as possible after the initial assaults, they were trained to fight as infantry to deal with any counterstrokes aimed at disrupting their work.
