City and port of Georgia, US, 29 km/18 mi from the mouth of the Savannah River; Founded 1733, Savannah was the first city in the US to be laid out in geometrically regular blocks.
Manufactures include paper products, aircraft, transportation equipment, chemicals, and food products. The Savannah, the first steam-powered ship to cross the Atlantic, was built here; most of the 25-day journey, in 1819, was made under sail. The first nuclear-powered merchant ship, launched by the US 1959, was given the same name. Founded by James Oglethorpe in 1733, Savannah is the oldest settlement in Georgia and was its capital 1754–86. World cotton prices were set by the exchange here from the late 18th century until 1895.
