Pyrrhus
King of Epirus; defeated the Romans in two battles in spite of staggering losses (319-272 bc).
(c. 318-272 bc) King of Epirus, Greece, from 307, who invaded Italy 280, as an ally of the Tarentines against Rome. He twice defeated the Romans but with such heavy losses that a Pyrrhic victory has come to mean a victory not worth winning. He returned to Greece 275 after his defeat at Beneventum, and was killed in a riot in Argos.
