A common mineral (iron disulfide) that has a pale yellow color; SYN. iron pyrite, fool's gold.
Iron sulfide FeS2; also called fool’s gold because of its yellow metallic luster. Pyrite has a hardness of 6–6.5 on the Mohs’ scale. It is used in the production of sulfuric acid.
