1. A screen used in India to separate women from men or strangers.
2. The Hindu or Moslem system of keeping women secluded; SYN. sex segregation.
Curtain concealing some Indian women of high birth; system of concealing such women from public gaze.
Seclusion of women practiced by some Islamic and Hindu peoples. It had begun to disappear with the adoption of Western culture, but the fundamentalism of the 1980s revived it; for example, the wearing of the chador (an all-enveloping black mantle) in Iran.
The Koran actually enjoins only “modesty” in dress.
