Pen name of Alexis Saint-Léger (1887-1975) French poet and diplomat. He was a US citizen from 1940. His first book of verse, Eloges 1911, reflects the ambience of the West Indies, where he was born and raised. His later works include Anabase 1924, an epic poem translated by T S Eliot 1930. He was awarded a Nobel Prize 1960.
Entering the foreign service 1914, he was secretary-general 193340. He then emigrated permanently to the US, and was deprived of French citizenship by the Vichy government.

In Greek mythology, a goddess (Roman Proserpina), the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, and queen of the underworld. She was carried off to the underworld as the bride of Pluto, who later agreed that she should spend six months of the year above ground with her mother. The myth symbolizes the growth and decay of vegetation and the changing seasons.
