(1910-1986) English tenor. He was the life companion of Benjamin Britten and with him co-founded the Aldeburgh Festival. He inspired and collaborated with Britten in a rich catalog of song cycles and operatic roles, exploiting a distinctively airy and luminous tone, from the title role in Peter Grimes 1947 to Aschenbach in Death in Venice 1973.

(1879-1916) Irish poet. He was prominent in the Gaelic revival, a leader of the Easter Rising 1916. Proclaimed president of the provisional government, he was court-martialed and shot after its suppression.

(1897-1972) Canadian politician, leader of the Liberal Party from 1958, prime minister 196368. As foreign minister 194857, he represented Canada at the United Nations, playing a key role in settling the Suez Crisis 1956. Nobel Peace Prize 1957.
Pearson served as president of the General Assembly 195253 and helped to create the UN Emergency Force (UNEF) that policed Sinai following the EgyptIsrael war of 1956. As prime minister, he led the way to formulating a national medicare (health insurance) law.

(1897-1969) US newspaper columnist. Although his frank, anonymously published exposé Washington Merry-Go-Round 1931 became a bestseller, he was fired from the Baltimore Sun when his authorship became known. In 1932, however, he began openly publishing a syndicated column of the same name, working in conjunction with Robert Allen until 1942. Pearson continued the column alone until his death, after which it was taken over by newspaper columnist and writer, Jack Anderson (1922 ).
