(1837-1899) US evangelist. During the American Civil War 1861–65, he provided medical and moral support to the troops. In the 1870s he became a popular evangelist and founded the Northfield Seminary (now School) for girls 1879 and the Mount Hermon School for boys 1881, both in Massachusetts.
Born in East Northfield, Massachusetts, US, Moody moved to Boston as a young man and joined the Congregational Church 1856. Later settling in Chicago, he devoted himself to preaching among the poor. In 1889 he founded the Chicago (later Moody) Bible Institute.
