McLean
(1785-1861) US jurist. In 1829 he was appointed to the US Supreme Court by President Jackson. During his Court tenure, McLean was an outspoken advocate of the abolition of slavery, writing a passionate dissent in the Dred Scott case 1857.
Born in Morris County, New Jersey, US, and raised in Ohio, McLean studied law in Cincinnati and was admitted to the bar 1807. After editing a local newspaper, he served in the US Congress 181316 and as a judge on the Ohio Supreme Court 181622.
Appointed postmaster general by President Monroe 1823, McLean reorganized the post office department, eliminating much corruption and waste.
