(1911-) Scottish writer and diplomat whose travels in the USSR and Central Asia inspired his Eastern Approaches 1949 and A Person from England 1958. His other books include To the Back of Beyond 1974, Holy Russia 1979, and Bonnie Prince Charlie 1988.

(1913-1983) British spy who worked for the USSR while in the UK civil service. He defected to the USSR 1951 together with Guy Burgess.
Maclean, brought up in a strict Presbyterian family, was educated at Cambridge, where he was recruited by the Sov
iet KGB. He worked for the UK Foreign Office in Washington 1944 and then Cairo 1948 before returning to London, becoming head of the American Department at the Foreign Office 1950.

(1922-1987) Scottish adventure novelist. His first novel, HMS Ulysses 1955, was based on wartime experience. It was followed by The Guns of Navarone 1957 and other adventure novels. Many of his books were made into films.
