interpretation

imenicaIPA: / ɛ̃tɛʁpʁetasjˈɔ̃ /

ETYM Latin interpretatio: cf. French interprétation.
In music, the manner in which a performer plays a work. Except in the case of prerecorded electronic music, which excludes the performer altogether, the limitations of notation mean that a composer cannot indicate the most subtle levels of dynamics, expression, articulation, and other details of performance practice. Inevitably the performer is responsible for these, although during some periods it has been the convention for the musician to take greater liberties than during others. For instance, the 18th-century performer had much greater freedom th
an the 20th-century performer, not only to alter a composer's dynamics and articulation without criticism, but also, to a degree, to change the notes themselves.
1. A mental representation of the meaning or significance of something; SYN. reading, version.
2. An explanation of something that is not immediately obvious; SYN. interpreting, rendition, rendering.
3. An explanation resulting from interpreting something.

interpreter

imenicaračunariIPA: / ɛ̃tɛʁpʁetˈe /

A program that translates and then executes each statement in a program written in an interpreted language. See also compiler, interpreted language, language processor.
(Computer science) A program that translates and executes source language statements one line at a time; SYN. interpretive program.
A system program that converts and executes each instruction of a high-level language program into machine code as it runs, before going onto the next instruction.
Computer program that translates and executes a program written in a high-level language. Unlike a compiler, which produces a complete machine-
code translation of the high-level program in one operation, an interpreter translates the source program, instruction by instruction, each time that program is run.
Because each instruction must be translated each time the source program is run, interpreted programs run far more slowly than do compiled programs. However, unlike compiled programs, they can be executed immediately without waiting for an intermediate compilation stage.
