Partially decomposed organic matter; the organic component of soil.
Soil containing decayed vegetable matter.
Component of soil consisting of decomposed or partly decomposed organic matter, dark in color and usually richer toward the surface. It has a higher carbon content than the original material and a lower nitrogen content, and is an important source of minerals in soil fertility.
