Any of several trees or shrubs of the genus Carpinus.
Any tree of the genus Carpinus of the birch family Betulaceae. They have oval, serrated leaves and bear pendant clusters of flowers, each with a nutlike seed attached to the base. The trunk is usually twisted, with smooth gray bark.
The American hornbeam C. caroliniana is native to the eastern US. The European hornbeam C. betulus is sometimes planted as an ornamental.
