1. high-definition television

(HDTV) television system offering a significantly greater number of scanning lines, and therefore a clearer picture, than that provided by conventional systems. The Japanese HDTV system, or Vision as it is trade-named in Japan, uses 1,125 scanning lines and an aspect ratio of 16:9 instead of the squarish 4:3 that conventional television uses. A European HDTV system, called HD-MAC, using 1,250 lines, is under development. In the US, a standard incorporating digital techniques is being discussed.
