Insectivorous mammal of the genus Erinaceus, native to Europe, Asia, and Africa. The body, including the tail, is 30 cm/1 ft long. It is grayish-brown in color, has a piglike snout, and is covered with sharp spines. When alarmed it can roll itself into a ball. Hedgehogs feed on insects, slugs, and carrion. Long-eared hedgehogs and desert hedgehogs are placed in different genera.
