(1927-) US tennis player, the first black American woman to compete at the US Championships at Forest Hills 1950 and at Wimbledon 1951. In 1957 she took both the women's singles and doubles titles at Wimbledon and the singles at Forest Hills. In 1958 she successfully defended all three titles.
Born in Silver, South Carolina, US, and raised in New York, Gibson was hindered in her tennis career by racial discrimination and segregation. In 1943 she won the New York State Negro girls' singles title, and in 1948 the national Negro women's title. She later played professional golf.

(1948-) US writer. His debut novel Neuromancer 1984 established the “cyberpunk” genre of computer-talk fantasy adventure and won both the Hugo and Nebula awards for science fiction. /> Gibson is credited with inventing the concept of virtual reality in Neuromancer. It was followed by Count Zero 1986 and Mona Lisa Overdrive 1988. Other works include The Difference Engine 1990, co-written with Bruce Sterling (1954–), about Babbage’s original 19th-century computer.

(1956-) Australian actor. He became an international star following lead roles in Mad Max 1979 and Mad Max II 1982 which was released in the US as Road Warrior. His other films include The Year of Living Dangerously 1982, Mutiny on the Bounty 1984 as Fletcher Christian, and the Lethal Weapon series, in which Danny Glover co-starred. He directed Man Without a Face 1993.

(1904-1979) US psychologist who did influential and highly original work on visual perception. An outspoken critic of the German physiologist Hermann Helmholtz's notion that perception involves unconscious inferences from sense data and learning-based associations, he proposed that perceptual information is gained directly from the environment, without the need for intermediate processing.
Educated at Princeton, Gibson went on to teach at Smith College, Massachusetts, 1928–49, where he was influenced by Kurt Koffka (1886–1941), and at Cornell University 1949–72.
In his experimental work, Gibson dispensed with the use of two-dimensional, static images and instead explored the perception of motion in freely moving subjects under natural conditions, publishing his results in The Perception of the Visual World 1950. He went on to develop what he called an ecological theory of perception in Senses Considered as Perceptual Systems 1966.

(1918-1944) British bomber pilot of World War II. He became famous as leader of the “dambuster raids” 16–17 May 1942; he formed 617 squadron specifically to bomb the Ruhr Dams, and as wing commander led the raid personally, dropping the first bomb on the Mohne Dam. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his leadership in this action.

(1867-1944) US illustrator. He portrayed an idealized type of American young woman, known as the “Gibson Girl”.
Gibson was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts. He worked for Life magazine, eventually becoming its editor. He also illustrated books and later painted in oils.
