Adopted name of Frances Gumm (1922-1969) US singer and actress. Her performances are marked by a compelling intensity. Her films include The Wizard of Oz 1939 (which featured the tune that was to become her theme song, ‘Over the Rainbow’), Babes in Arms 1939, Strike Up the Band 1940, Meet Me in St Louis 1944, Easter Parade 1948, A Star is Born 1954, and Judgment at Nuremberg 1961.
She began her acting career 1935 in the Andy Hardy series. She was the mother of actress and singer Liza Minnelli.
