(born Gurney) (1780-1845) English Quaker philanthropist. She formed an association for the improvement of conditions for female prisoners 1817, and worked with her brother, Joseph Gurney (1788–1847), on an 1819 report on prison reform.

(Eliot) (1866-1934) English artist and art critic. He was a champion of Post-Impressionism and an admirer of the French painter Cézanne. He was a member of the Bloomsbury Group and founded the Omega Workshops to improve design and to encourage young artists. His critical essays, which were influential in the 1920s and 1930s, are contained in Vision and Design 1920.

(1899-1987) English architect. He was a pioneer of the Modern Movement in Britain. Representative is his Sun House, Hampstead, London, 1935, with its horizontally banded windows and white stucco finish. Fry worked in partnership with Walter Gropius 1934–36, and with Denys Lasdun (among others) 1951–58. He was Le Corbusier's senior architect at Chandigarh, India, 1951–54.

(1907-) English dramatist. He was a leader of the revival of verse drama after World War II with The Lady’s Not for Burning 1948, Venus Observed 1950, and A Sleep of Prisoners 1951.
