In astronomy, an asteroid, discovered 1898, that can pass 22 million km/14 million mi from the Earth, as observed in 1975. Eros was the first asteroid to be discovered that has an orbit coming within that of Mars. It is elongated, measures about 36 x 12 km/22 x 7 mi, rotates around its shortest axis every 5.3 hours, and orbits the Sun every 1.8 years.
