(1829-1888) US political leader, one of the founders of the Republican Party 1854. He served in the US House of Representatives 185963 and 186567, and in the US Senate 186781. A radical Republican, Conkling was an active prosecutor in President A Johnson's impeachment trial.
Born in Albany, New York, US, the son of a judge, Conkling was admitted to the bar 1850 and soon appointed district attorney.
He served as mayor of Utica 1858. As an opponent of President Garfield, Conkling declined an appointment to the US Supreme Court 1882 and returned to private law practice.
