(Sidney) (1923-1981)
US screenwriter and dramatist of great passion and insight. He established his reputation with naturalistic television plays, at least two of which were adapted for cinema: Marty 1955 (for which he won an Oscar for the film screenplay) and Bachelor Party 1957. He also won Oscars for the bitterly satirical The Hospital 1971 and Network 1976.
His stage plays include The Tenth Man 1959 and Gideon 1961. He wrote the screenplay for Ken Russells Altered States 1980, which was very loosely based on Chayefskys novel of the same name.
