2. Any of various trees or shrubs of the genus Cassia having pinnately compound leaves and usually yellow flowers followed by long seedpods.
Bark of a SE Asian plant Cinnamomum cassia of the laurel family Lauraceae. It is aromatic and closely resembles true cinnamon, for which it is a widely used substitute. Cassia is also a genus of pod-bearing tropical plants of the family Caesalpiniaceae, many of which have strong purgative properties; Cassia senna is the source of the laxative drug senna.
