(1905-1976) English painter. He was devoted to themes of city life, its bustle, humor, and grimy squalor. The Snack Bar 1930 (Tate Gallery, London) and his watercolor scenes of Harlem, New York, 1933–34, are characteristic. Postwar works include religious paintings and landscapes.
