ETYM Greek belemon dart, from ballein to throw: cf. French bélemnite.
A conical calcareous fossil tapering to a point at one end and with a conical cavity at the other end containing a small chambered phragmocone from the shell of any of numerous extinct cephalopods of the family Belemnitidae.
Bullet-shaped molluskan fossil.
Extinct relative of the squid, with rows of little hooks rather than suckers on the arms. The parts of belemnites most frequently found as fossils are the bullet-shaped shells that were within the body. Like squid, these animals had an ink sac which could be used to produce a smokescreen when attacked.
