ETYM Formerly also banjore and banjer; corrupted from bandore, through black slave pronunciation.
A stringed instrument of the guitar family that has long neck and circular body.
Resonant stringed musical instrument with a long fretted neck and circular drum-type sound box covered on the topside only by stretched skin (now usually plastic). It is played with a plectrum.
The banjo originated in the American South among black slaves (based on a similar instrument of African origin).
