(1894-1982) US film director. He made such epics as The Big Parade 1925 and Duel in the Sun 1946. He has been praised for his stylistic experimentation and socially concerned themes. He received an honorary Academy Award 1979.
His other films include The Crowd 1928 and Guerra e Pace/War and Peace 1956.
He was instrumental in setting up the Screen Directors' Guild 1936 and was a crucial figure in 1930s Hollywood.
