A former state in East Africa; united with Zanzibar in 1964 to form Tanzania.
Former state in E Africa, which now forms the mainland of Tanzania. A German colony 1884–1914, it was ceded to Britain 1919, first as League of Nations mandate, and from 1946 as UN Trust Territory. It gained independence 1961, and in 1964 united with Zanzibar to form Tanzania.Lake, Lake 772 m/2,534 ft above sea level in the Great Rift Valley, E Africa, with Zaire to the W, Zambia to the S, and Tanzania and Burundi to the E. It is about 645 km/400 mi long, with an area of about 31,000 sq km/12,000 sq mi, and is the deepest lake (1,435 m/4,710 ft) in Africa. The mountains around its shores rise to about 2,700 m/8,860 ft. The chief ports on the lake are Bujumbura (Burundi), Kigoma (Tanzania), and Kalémié (Zaire).
