(Richard) (1860-1942) English artist. His Impressionist cityscapes of London and Venice, portraits, and domestic and music-hall interiors capture subtleties of tone and light, often with a melancholic atmosphere.
Sickert was born in Munich, the son of a Danish painter, and lived in London from 1868. He studied at the Slade School of Art and established friendships with the artists Whistler and Degas. His work inspired the Camden Town Group; examples include Ennui about 1913 (Tate Gallery, London).
