(or Lapp) Member of a group of herding people living in N Scandinavia and the Kola Peninsula, and numbering about 46,000 (1983). Some are nomadic, others lead a more settled way of life. They live by herding reindeer, hunting, fishing, and producing handicrafts.
Their language belongs to the Finno-Ugric family. Their religion is basically animist, but incorporates elements of Christianity.
