(c. 15 BC-c. AD 50) Roman fable writer. He was born a slave in Macedonia and later freed by Emperor Augustus. The allusions in his fables (modeled on those of Aesop) caused him to be brought to trial by a minister of Emperor Tiberius. His work was popular in the Middle Ages.
