(1935-) Italian tenor. He has an impressive dynamic range. His operatic roles have included Rodolfo in La Bohčme, Cavaradossi in Tosca, the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto, and Nemorino in L’Elisir d’amore. He gave his first performance in the title role of Otello in Chicago, US, 1991. He has done much to popularize opera, performing to wide audiences outside the opera houses including open-air concerts in New York and London city parks.
He collaborated with José Carreras and Placido Domingo in a recording of operatic hits coinciding with the World Cup soccer series in Rome 1990; his rendition of ‘Nessun Dorma’ from Puccini’s Turandot was adopted as the theme music for the series.
