(1935-) Japanese novelist. Involved in leftist politics in Japan, he has explored the situation of culturally disinherited postwar youth. His works include Kojinteki-na taiken/A Personal Matter 1964, describing from direct experience the development of an abnormal baby, seen by some as a metaphor for the contemporary Japanese situation. His earlier novel Shiiku/The Catch 1958 was awarded the Akutagawa Prize. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature 1994.
