(John Whelan) (1900-1991) Irish novelist, short-story writer, and biographer. His first novel, A Nest of Simple Folk 1933, was followed by an edition of translated Gaelic, The Silver Branch 1938. His many biographies include Daniel OConnell 1938 and De Valera 1939, about the nationalist whom he had fought beside in the Irish Republican Army.

(1833-1868) Australian Fenian supporter, born in Ireland, who made an assassination attempt on Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, second son of Queen Victoria, during a visit to Australia in 1868. He shot the prince at Clontarf, Sydney. This was an isolated incident rather than part of a Fenian plot as claimed by anti-Irish elements. O'Farrell was convicted of attempted murder and hanged.
