(1734-1806) American political leader. A signatory of the Declaration of Independence 1776, he served in the Continental Congress 1775–78. In 1781 he was appointed superintendent of finance and dealt with the economic problems of the new nation. He served as one of Pennsylvania's first US senators 1789–95.
Born in Liverpool, England, Morris emigrated to America 1747, joining a merchant firm in Philadelphia. He became a cautious supporter of American independence. He attended the Constitutional Convention 1787.
(1956-) US choreographer and dancer. His ballets merge various styles ranging from avant-garde, ballet, folk, and jazz dance. He was artistic director of the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels 1988–91. He is the director of his own company in New York.
(1926-) English travel writer and journalist. Her books display a zestful, witty, and knowledgeable style and offer vivid sense impressions combined with deftly handled historical perspectives. These books include Coast to Coast 1956, Venice 1960, Oxford 1965, Farewell the Trumpets 1978, and Among the Cities 1985. Born James Morris, her adoption of female gender is described in Conundrum 1974.
As a young journalist with the British Everest expedition in 1953 James Morris was the first to send news that the mountain had been conquered.
(John) (1928-) British zoologist, a writer and broadcaster on animal and human behavior. His book The Naked Ape 1967 was a best seller.
Morris studied at Birmingham and at Oxford, working on animal behavior under Nikolaas Tinbergen. He became head of the Granada Television and Film Unit at the Zoological Society in London in 1956. Three years later he was appointed Curator of Mammals at London Zoo and from 1967 to 1968 served as director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.
In his book The Human Zoo 1969, Morris scrutinizes the society that the naked ape has created for itself. He compares civilized humans with their captive animal counterparts and shows how confined animals seem to demonstrate the same neurotic behavior patterns as human beings often do in crowded cities. He believes the urban environment of the cities to be the human zoo.
