Capital of Ladakh region, E Kashmir, India, situated E of the river Indus, 240 km/150 mi E of Srinagar. Leh is the nearest supply base to the Indian army outpost on the Siachen Glacier.

(1870-1948) Hungarian composer. He wrote many operettas, among them The Merry Widow 1905, The Count of Luxembourg 1909, Gypsy Love 1910, and The Land of Smiles 1929. He also composed songs, marches, and a violin concerto.

(1878-1963) US political leader. In 1932 he became governor of New York, and his subsequent support of F D Roosevelt’s reform policies earned his own administration the name “Little New Deal”.
In 1942 Lehman was appointed director of the federal Office of Foreign Relief and Rehabilitation. He served in the US Senate 1949–57.
Born in New York and educated at Williams College, Lehman joined his family's banking business and served in the army during World War I. Later entering politics he was elected New York's lieutenant governor 1928.

(1888-1976) German soprano. She excelled in Wagnerian operas and was an outstanding Marschallin in Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier.

(1881-1919) German sculptor, painter, and printmaker. He was a leading Expressionist of the early 1900s, whose elongated, sorrowing figures carry great emotional power. His principal works are a distillation of archaic and classical forms, their pathos derived from the artist’s innate melancholy and his impressions of the chaos of war. The Fallen 1915–16 (Lehmbruck Estate, Duisburg) is a late masterpiece in cast stone.
Lehmbruck executed his major works 1910–19, initially in Paris 1910–14 under the influence of Rodin and Aristide Maillol and stimulated by his friendships with Brancusi, Archipenko, and Modigliani.
