(c. 1780-c. 1825) Pirate in America. Suspected of complicity with the British, he was attacked by American forces soon after the outbreak of the Anglo-American War 1812. He proved his loyalty to General Andrew Jackson by his heroic participation in the Battle of New Orleans 1815.
Reportedly born in France, Lafitte settled in New Orleans, where he became a smuggler and privateer. Gathering a band of followers around him, he set up headquarters in nearby Barataria Bay and spent several years raiding Spanish shipping in the Gulf of Mexico. After the war with England 1814 Lafitte established headquarters in Galveston Bay.
