Residential town and seaside resort in East Sussex, England, adjoining Brighton to the W; est) 90,400. It was one of the world's pioneering film-making centers at the turn of the century.
The Brighton School of British film-makers was working in the area at the turn of the century, led by James Williamson (1855–1933) and Albert Smith (1864–1959, who pioneered the use of close-ups and, together with Charles Urban, invented the first commercially viable cinematographic color process used in motion pictures, Kinemacolor, 1906). It was the home of English novelist Ivy Compton-Burnett 1892–1916.
