(shortened form of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory)
US center for particle physics at Batavia, Illinois, near Chicago. It is named for Italian–US physicist Enrico Fermi. Fermilab was opened in 1972, and is the home of the Tevatron, the world's most powerful particle accelerator. It is capable of boosting protons and antiprotons to speeds near that of light (to energies of 20 TeV).
