(1885-1933) King of Iraq 1921–33. An Arab nationalist leader during World War I, he was instrumental in liberating the Middle East from Ottoman control and was declared king of Syria in 1918 but deposed by the French in 1920. The British then installed him as king in Iraq, where he continued to foster pan-Arabism.
