Port in Lower Saxony, Germany, at the mouth of the river Ems; It is a fishing port and an export outlet for the river Ruhr, with which it is connected by the Dortmund–Ems Canal. There are oil refineries here.
German light cruiser of World War I. It was mainly used as a “commerce raider” in the Indian and Pacific oceans, sinking several merchant ships; its captain, von Müller, became renowned for his humanity in providing for the safety and survival of the crews of the ships he sank. The Emden was itself sunk by the Australian HMAS Sydney 9 Nov 1914. Although 230 of the crew were lost, Capt von Müller was among the survivors.
