Adopted name of Mihaly Kertész (1888-1962)
Hungarian-born film director. He worked in Austria, Germany, and France before moving to the US 1926, where he made several films with Errol Flynn (Captain Blood 1935). He directed Mildred Pierce 1945, which revitalized Joan Crawford’s career, and Casablanca 1942 (Academy Award).
His wide range of films include The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex 1939, The Adventures of Robin Hood 1938, Yankee Doodle Dandy 1942, and White Christmas 1954.
